Somewhere within all of us is a sense of adventure and spirit, a yearning to travel to unknown places and see new sights that we've never seen before. Sometimes, this is planned well enough in advance. Other times, it can happen suddenly on a whim! Humankind inherently has this need to travel, whether it be beyond the farthest reaches of outer space or to countries and landscapes one has personally never been to before. The almost heroic nature of going on these adventures can offer unique, breathtaking experiences as well as unknown dangers and exciting thrills that lie ahead for the adventurer.

This fanfare is a tribute to the inherent spirit of going on these journeys and to those who partake in them. Its title is a reference to a quote from Shakespeare's Hamlet, yet unlike the play, there are no intentional allusions to seeking journeys beyond death. Rather, the essence of exploring everything that our beautiful planet and beyond has to offer is the main focus of this piece. The journey itself is given its own heroic theme, taking shape and transforming multiple times within the brass ensemble's various colors. The additional musical figures that permeate the work are bridged together by formal sections that ultimately highlight the various stops one might take on their journey. While each section is individually different, they encapsulate (when brought together) the overall fun, whimsy, and joy that can be experienced in any grand adventure.
