ANNOUNCING THE 2022 M.O.T.I.F. MINIATURES SERIES
Back in late 2019/early 2020, I created a very brief commissioning series for new concert band music geared towards the growth and promotion of new music at the Grade 1-3 level. The series was aimed at opening up opportunities for music programs who don’t often, if not ever, have the chance to commission/premiere new music and/or participate in the collaborative process with living composers.
Now, at the start of a new year, I’m very excited to announce the continuation of this miniatures series - this time, for new band, flex, orchestra, and chamber music, all at the Grade 0.5-3 level. Electroacoustic miniatures are also available (fixed-media only). This year, the process to join will be a little different.
Normally, my commission rates for new works are high due to a variable list of factors. However, with this series, I am aiming to create more accessibility for ensembles, artists, and organizations to participate in the collaborative process with a living composer, especially those who don’t often (or ever) have this opportunity for one reason or another. Finances can, at times, become a significant barrier to these projects, especially if funding is generally limited.
So, for the first time, I’m introducing a pay-what-you-can commissioning model. Suggested rates will be $80 per miniature and $100 per electroacoustic miniature. No ensemble/artist/organization/etc. will be turned away if unable to pay (or contribute any amount towards) these listed rates. This is a series I believe in and want to continue - your participation not only results in the creation and funding of new music, but also the opportunity to collaborate and work with a living composer who supports you, your students, and your artistic goals. Everyone benefits.
